Ivan can hardly be painted as a soft touch. Here is a man who famously slept under bridges, in train stations and in his car when he was trying to establish himself on the tour.

But today, as he entered the fourth set of his second-round match against Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur, Ivan was rendered almost completely immobile by cramp. He simply could not move around the court and was forced to abandon the match midway through the fourth set.

"Today, 30 minutes after the match I could not walk," said Dodig, who was scheduled on the shade-free Court 13. "There was 10 people around me. I was thinking I could maybe even die here."

In the words of Leon Smith, the British Davis Cup captain:
“When someone like Dodig – a really tough competitor – is forced to retire, you know it must be hot out there."
